Umm. No. It was returning undef or true. I must have missed the documentation
that suggested I needed to return Maypole constants instead.

Thanks - that seems to have fixed that particular problem.
I'll leave the debug { 1; } in there, and see if it detects the next time I
make a typo in a model class..
