[Maypole] maypole without mod_perl?

I've just discovered Maypole and want to try it. I saw from CPAN that
there's a version CGI::Maypole that works without mod_perl (which I
don't have) but when I try to install Maypole, the installation fails
looking for mod_perl when building Apache::Request.

Is it possible to install Maypole without mod_perl?
